Our HISTORY
impacting the world
The Good Shepherd International School was officially opened by an Ethiopian lady, the late Mrs. Mulu Sani, in September 1995 as a nursery school. She was running the school with the help of her husband the late Mr. Ben Sani, a professional Malawian who served with the Malawian Diplomatic service for several years. The school grew by one class each year, and now it is a fully fledged school consisting of Baby Class, Nursery, Reception Class, Primary: (double stream) Years 1 – 6 and Secondary: (single stream) Year 7 – Year 11.
The school follows the National Curriculum for England and Wales leading up to the IGCSE University of Cambridge Examinations. The first group of students to sit the IGCSE examinations did so in May 2005. The school is also built upon a Christian Foundation – hence its name. Praying is a part of the Good Shepherd culture and each day begins and ends with a prayer. Although we are a Christian school, we enrol and respect children of all religions, cultures and races. The founders of the school passed away tragically in a car accident in December 2003. Since then, the children of the late Sani’s have been running the school. To date, the school has approximately 600 students.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Sani had a vision and deep commitment to provide the best possible educational opportunities for children of Malawi who come from all walks of life. The late Mrs. Mulu Sani had a deep compassion for the welfare and education of the African child. Her dream was to assist the orphan child. She was concerned with the thousands of children that were being left alone by dying parents, and who could no longer attend school because there were no family members to support them.
The HIV-Aids pandemic has ravaged the most productive members of the society, leaving behind increasing numbers of orphans. Children of working class parents spend most of the time at home without parental or guardian supervision. Children who once came to school with their parents find that they are forced to drop out from school because parents have died and there is no financial help from relatives.
It is against this background, that the Good Shepherd International School was opened. The school aims to create well disciplined, well rounded individuals, healthy in mind and body and God fearing, ready to make an impact on the world.
